L-Arginine for Erectile Dysfunction
L-Arginine is an amino acid that is a key
ingredient in sperm formation. It is also a precursor to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator that
dilates arteries and relaxes the inner smooth tissue of the penis, which can often become
congested.
Scientific research has shown that supplementing
oral arginine does not usually give good results. It is best to increase the level of arginine in the body
itself. This is now the new focus in developing treatment for erectile
dysfunction.
An enzyme called arginase plays the role of a
‘house keeper’ in a series of complex chemical chain reactions during penile erection. Arginase controls the
synthesis of arginine.
When the activity of arginase is high, the level of
arginine is low, and vice versa. We can therefore block or limit the activity of arginase to increase the supply
of arginine. This helps better penile erection and performance during sexual
activity.
