Will you suffer from Erectile Dysfunction / Impotence After Male Prostate Gland Enlargement / Prostate Disease Surgery?

What happens after your physician confirms you've prostate gland enlargement or prostate gland disease? Will you suffer from erectile dysfunction? Impotence? What are the implications for your sex life?

So, you're a man and you've been diagnosed with prostate gland enlargement or male prostate disease and you need surgery or medical treatment. You'd probably be anxious, and your first questions would be - "What about my sex life? Will I suffer from erectile dysfunction? Impotence? What actually happens after treatment?

The sad news is that male prostate gland disease will always lead to some form or other of erectile dysfunction / sexual impotence.

Even if a man undergoes a surgical procedure using the nerve sparing technique, it is still highly likely that he will experience a certain degree or other of erectile dysfunction / sexual impotence.

Historically, surgery for prostate gland removal has always resulted in erectile dysfunction/sexual impotence to varying degrees. Modern advances in surgical procedures called the "nerve-sparing surgery" may help reduce this risk of male sexual impotence. The nerve sparing procedure avoids cutting the two bundles of nerves and vessels that run along the surface of the male prostate gland that are essential for an erection.

However, this procedure is not viable for every man. If the prostate gland disease is advanced, and is located too close to the nerves, the procedure becomes difficult to administer. Under such circumstances, even with the use of this procedure, many men, especially the older ones, will become sexually impotent and suffer from erectile dysfunction as a consequence.

The fact is that most men will lose a degree of sexual function. If a man has a problem with erectile dysfunction/sexual impotence prior to treatment, the nerve-sparing surgery is not indicated.

What, then, are some possibilities available to men AFTER being diagnosed with male prostate gland disease and who, at the same time, experience erectile dysfunction / sexual impotence?

• There exists now in the market numerous erectile dysfunction drugs (EDDs). These drugs help in promoting erections by increasing blood flow to the penis.

• A product called Prostaglandin E1 can help promote erections. Prostaglandin E1 is produced naturally and can be injected almost painlessly into the base of the penis before sex.

• Vacuum devices are designed specifically to create an erection when placed around the entire penis prior to sex.

• A penile implant or prostheses can aid in restoring an ability to achieve an erection.

• There is in the market today some excellent natural food supplements that help with erectile dysfunction / male sexual impotence. A man has to be very patient when using these, as natural remedies take time and persistence before good results can be had. However, patience and perseverance bring their own rewards, as results can often be long-lasting with few, or no, side effects.

Erectile dysfunction / male sexual impotence will very most likely begin immediately after surgery for the removal of the male prostate gland. However, if the procedure of nerve sparing is used, the man stands a chance of recovery within a year of this surgery. In the event that nerve sparing procedure is not used, it is unlikely that the man will recover normal erectile function.

Conducted experiments report that using sparing nerves on both sides of a male prostate gland have enabled 60-70% of men to regain erectile function.

In addition, erectile dysfunction / male impotence drugs seem to be effective for up to 43% of men whose male prostate gland was removed surgically. This trend looks promising.

When radiation therapy is used, there are different results. The treatment will cause the man to experience erectile dysfunction / impotence, but this usually happens six months later after commencement of the treatment. But there is hope here, as tests indicate that as many as 50-60% of men regain sexual erections with the use of EDDs.

Studies indicate that when taking the hormonal treatment route, men experience erectile dysfunction / impotence between two and four weeks after beginning the treatment. Additionally, this is also linked with decreasing sexual desire. However, the good news is that once the hormonal therapy has ended, normal erectile function returns.

All said and done, the best way a man can take is really the prevention route, and looking after the health of his prostate gland. This can be done by following a healthy lifestyle, decreasing stress levels, eating a wholesome and healthy diet, using appropriate natural food supplements, taking specific foods like saw palmetto, pumpkin seeds together with a high intake of zinc and peptides, and using holistic treatments like Ayurveda, Herbalism, Naturopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Yoga.

Not to forget regular check-ups with his physician to monitor his male prostate gland health.
